David Lee Montez was born on June 3, 1973 in Visalia California. A month later his family moved to Denair California.

David attended Denair Elementary School. While in his youth David was very physically active. He participated in little league baseball and soccer. He attended 6th grade at Denair Middle school and had his first job as a paper boy. He then transferred to Turlock Jr. High in the seventh grade. During this time period a lot of his time was spent skateboarding and fishing. He was also active in the Boy Scouts.

At 14, David attended Turlock High School and graduated in1991. At the age of 14 he was exposed to rock climbing while attending a Boy Scout camp. This became a favorite activity for him. Prior to getting his driver’s license he would encourage his artist mother (chauffeur) to paint in geographical areas which also had ample rock to climb. Upon obtaining his drivers license at age 16 he continued to climb and began snow boarding. At the age of 17 David worked at Camp John Mensinger (Boy Scout Camp) for the summer. He was also awarded the Eagle Scout award just prior to turning 18.

In 1992, at the age of 19, David decided to serve a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was called to the Brazil Ribeirão Preto Mission where he learned to speak fluent Portuguese.

Soon after his return from the mission (February 1995) he began his college education at Ricks College in Rexburg Idaho where he began his studies in construction management. Soon after his arrival at school, he became friends with Shannon Diane Caldwell. In the summer of 1995, David decided to go to Alaska to work in a fish cannery but soon realized that he missed Shannon more than he realized. Upon his return to school, after summer break, David and Shannon became engaged. They were married on December 28, 1995.

Shannon received and associates degree from Ricks College then transferred to the University of Utah in April of 1996. David also transferred to the University of Utah and changed his focus of study from construction management to business.

In 1997 they gave birth to their first child, Shelby Lynn Montez. Her birth inspired David to further focus on his studies to accounting. Their second child, Matthew Davis Montez, was born. In December 2000 David graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
